Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy is One Option For Weight Loss
For people who struggle with weight gain and are considered to be obese, a Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy can be an option. This is a type of weight loss surgery in which approximately 85% of the stomach is surgically and physically removed from the patient’s abdomen, leaving a cylindrical or sleeve-shaped stomach (hence the term "vertical sleeve gastrectomy"). This leaves the patient with a stomach capacity ranging from about 60 to 150 cc (2-5 oz.). In general the vertical sleeve gastrectomy is best suited to patients who are either very overweight or whose medical condition would rule out other forms of weight loss surgery. In recent years, the cost to perform this type of weight-loss surgery has decreased and the number of physicians qualified to perform these surgeries has increased, giving the patient a far greater number of options.
