First time insurance

I am a 19 year old male. My parents are buying me my first car. It is a nice pre-owned car. How does the insurance for the car generally work? Is it required? I will be in college next year. Can they take care of my car insurance? How does it work? I heard that they can put my car under their insurance. Is this true? Please explain. All i know is that first time insurance is pretty high, as my parents have warned me.
