Topeka Combat Air Museum

July 16th, 2008

Located at Forbes Field, which is slightly south of Topeka, is the Combat Air Museum. The museum is one of the many great and unique attractions that the Topeka area has to offer vacationers and residents. Some of the most incredible sights the museum offers are the recreations of WWII (and later) era sites. One of the most telling is the replica of a German POW camp. You might also enjoy seeing the Iwo Jima mural, which does a good job of capturing the historical moment of when several Marines and a Navy Corpsman raised the U.S. flag on the island. Of course, it’s the aircraft that most people come to see, and you will find plenty at the Combat Air Museum. From fighter craft, to transport carriers and helicopters, just about every type of aircraft ever employed by the military is represented here. Other than just the aircraft and the exhibits, you can see an actual ambulance that dates back to WWII, and a Jeep of the variety that was in use during the Korean War in the 1950s. Don’t forget to check out the gift shop as well – you certainly wouldn’t want to leave without picking up a souvenir!
