Why are some registrations called DVLA number plates
February 5th, 2009
New buyers of private number plates often refer to a certain type as DVLA number plates. This sets them apart from the more traditional type of private plates which are known as cherished numbers. This refers back to the time before DVLA started selling registration numbers and just administered the transfer of them between vehicles. Back then a registration number had to be removed from the donor vehicles and transferred to either a retention certificate or onto another vehicles known as the recipient vehicle. With the advent of DVLA number plates the certificate of entitlement came into being where no donor exists.
