Do you know when a background check is being done on you?

As I continue on my quest for a job I had this random thought. I wonder if you know if someone is running a background check on you. I mean, it would be great to know if a potential employer was checking out my background because then at least I would know they were considering me for the job. I really thought, finding a job out of college would be a lot easier than this. I am tired of waiting on tables, although I appreciate having a job. I want to be working in my field and can’t wait until I can land a job.
