How can I let people know about my site?

I am planning to start a new website for my business. I have a store and think that I could sell a lot more of my products if people from further away could buy them as well. But how do I let people know about the website and get them to come? I need to get targeted web traffic that will increase my sales or else it won’t be cost effective for me to maintain a website. Can anyone tell me what I will need to do in order to achieve this? I want to make sure I get enough web sales to cover the costs at least.
