Small design studios

The rest of the interior designers provided design services in architectural and landscape architectural services, furniture and home-furnishing stores, building material and supplies dealers, and residential building construction companies. About 26 percent of interior designers worked in specialized design services. Approximately 26 percent were self-employed interior design firms. Many faculty members continue to consult privately or operate small design studios to complement their classroom activities. Other designers leave the occupation to become teachers in schools of design or in colleges and universities. Some experienced designers open their own firms or decide to specialize in one aspect of interior design.
