Diagnosing Panic Attacks in Children

January 24th, 2008

If you have a suspicion your child is suffering from panic attacks but your physician has said it is anything but… don’t be so sure. Doctors cannot pinpoint panic attacks in children as they are less likely to open up in a foreign place, in front of a stranger, i.e. a doctor’s surgery. If you are not satisfied with the diagnosis given, talk to your child, analyse what may be the problem, are they being bullied, dislike a certain lesson or daily schedule, do they have an inbuilt fear of some situation that is upcoming. Panic attacks in children are often masked as other issues. Don’t be afraid to question your doctor’s expertise. They are only doing what they think is right, but if they don’t have all the information available they cannot make the correct diagnosis.
