Healthy Hearing Thanks To Hearing Aids

March 10th, 2009

There are over 25 million Americans who have hearing loss. Out of those, one out of four is older than the 65. Hearing loss may be caused from tumors, head injuries, strokes, infections, some medications or even having too much ear wax in the ear. It can also come from being exposed to noises that are too loud, like tools, engines or music. The ear wax changing in an older person may also cause the loss of hearing.

Hearing loss can usually be fixed for most people, depending on the type of loss. All treatments for hearing loss have to work safely and be approved by the FDA. Those treatments may include ear hearing aids, medications and other devices. Hearing aids generally help when damage has been done to the inner ear. This type of loss is very common in the aging process. Younger people are also seen wear hearing aids for loss hearing usually caused by infections or being around loud noises too often.

Sometimes loss of hearing is only in one ear and only one hearing aid is needed. Other times there is loss in both ears and two hearing aids are needed. There are many types of hearing aids for different kind of needs. If you need to wear one, it is important to find the right one for you.

These are the different types of hearing aids available:

Behind-the-ear. Fits behind the ears with custom ear mold
In-the-ear. Custom made to fit in the outer ear.
In-the-ear-canal. Custom made to fit in the ear canal.
On-the-body. For extremely bad hearing. A case to carry with microphone, amplifier and battery.
