How Quick Can I Whiten My Teeth?

I’m sure we’ve all seen the promos for Crest Whitestrips Pro Effects but how many of us have seen the actual effects? I haven’t seen anyone I know with whiter teeth because of those strips, so I have no idea if they work or how long they take to work.
It could all be hype do to really great marketing, but I guess they have to do some of what they promise since they’re still around. My question is do I have to buy the strips for like…the rest of my life to have white teeth? And are any of the “Pro Effects” negative side effects?
If anyone out there has tried these strips, some feedback will be much appreciated.
