Is Enlargement of the Prostate Life Threatening?

My husband was just told by his doctor that he has enlargement of the prostate. His doctor just told him this and basically walked out of the room without asking if he had any questions or anything. He told him to make an appointment with a specialist for treatment. We did get an appointment, but it is two weeks away. Now we sit and worry about how serious this may be and if he will need to have any surgeries. Is this type of condition something we should be extremely concerned about? Is it something that can be easily treated with medication or can it be life threatening?
