Quieting Weight Loss Fears
October 2nd, 2009
When my doctor suggested surgery for weight loss, I was taken aback to say the least! “Aren’t those procedures risky and invasive?” I asked. Then he gave me the facts. The complications of having excess weight and health concerns that inevitably coexist with them far outweigh the risks associated with a sleeve gastrectomy. This surgery is performed by laparoscopy, which is minimally invasive and easy to recover from. Also, nothing is done to the intestines to affect absorption. He told me one other key factor: in patients with an excessive BMI, like me, excess weight is shed slowly, and should the desired results not be achieved, I can still go on to another, riskier surgery for correction. He calmed my fears, and set me on the path to a healthier me. Thanks doc!
