South Africa’s Practice of Podiatry

November 19th, 2009

We all know that South Africa is a country of 44 million people but do you know that it only has 150 podiatrists and one small training school? Indeed and when you compare it to Australia, which is a population of almost 20 million, you may get a shocking difference as Australia has  1500 podiatrists and 7 training schools (all bigger than the one in South Africa!). You may then start to think that there is something wrong happening. Well, the answer is that maybe there is an unmet need in the population in South Africa or they just do not need as many podiatrists as the rest of the world does. What do you think is the right answer? What I think is that the former reason speaks volumes. Because of that, podiatry in South Africa has still a very long way to go when it comes to educating the population and recruiting potential new students into the podiatry training program.
