Viral Skin Infections

January 10th, 2008

The three main groups of viral skin infections are papillomavirus, herpes simplex virus and poxvirus.

Cold sores are  caused by herpes simplex virus and are found around the regin of the mouth. There is no cure for herpes simplex . Hot sun, a cold wind, or coming down with a cold can start  an outbreak of herpes simplex virus. You may feel a tingling sensation of the lips before seeing the cold sore or may feel an itching or irritation of the lips.

Shingles is also known as Herpes Zoster and is a common infection that produces blisters on the skin in any part on the body. The pain from this infection can  drag on for months. This infection is common in persons with weakened immune systems and in those who are over 50. The symptoms of shingles include skin sensitivity or pain in the area where the rash appeared.  Some of the symptoms include  headache, fever, and stomach problems.
