Weight Loss Options Before The Advent of Medical Gastric Bypass

What were the options available to morbidly obese patients before the advent of current surgical techniques?

The main weight loss method, of course, was simply to change your eating habits. Cut down on sweets and starches and eat more fresh fruit, vegetables and eat less red meat.

Then there were the drugs developed over the years. In the 1960s, amphetamines were popular. They did reduce the appetite, but the side effects were quite risky, among them addiction. The use of amphetamines is not encouraged in weight loss today.

For morbidly obese patients today, the treatment of last resort would have to be the medical gastric bypass surgery, when all other options have failed.
