Natural to Gas Fireplace

Our house was one of the first ones to be built in our association and with that being said, we are one of the only houses in the entire area that still has a natural wood burning fireplace. Not that we can use it though because of the different environmental laws in place we are not allowed to burn in it. So we are looking into converting the fireplace to a gas log and are looking at the cost of home heating oil. Is it really going to be efficient for us to heat the house in the winter this way?
