Fun in the Sun
March 31st, 2009
One of my favorite activities at the beach when I was a kid was also one of the simplest. Growing up in the Puget Sound we weren’t blessed with white sand beaches like those found on a tropical island some place far off in the south pacific. I had never seen one except in books. But we did have driftwood and we did have rocks. My brothers and I would grab a small piece of driftwood and hurtle it into the water about 10 feet off shore. We’d then start grabbing from the overabundance of rocks around us and see who could hit the log the most times, or the first, or the farthest away. Any number of games can be devised and it doesn’t matter if you’re a boy or a girl. It’s simple, requires no packing and can occupy children for hours at the beach. Adults are allowed to play too.
